Great Comp Garden is the creation of Eric Cameron - and his late wife Joy. They moved to Great Comp some 40 years ago; from a house with a small garden, in Clapham. The garden is open to the public for visiting.
It is a peaceful haven - largely informal - with meandering paths through thousands of colourful shrubs and choice perennial plants. You will also pass many "ruins" - built by Eric Cameron himself! (If this seems a little eccentric, then so be it.)

To give you a taste of what is to be found, there are at least 70 Magnolias in 30 or so varieties, including a magnificent Magnolia veitchii which towers some 50' over surrounding plants. It often has in excess of 2000 blooms and is probably one of the best specimens in the country.

  • Tranquility

  • A plantsman's dream

  • Multi-seasonal

  • Ornaments & 'ruins'

  • Woodlands of 'exotic' shrubs

  • Choice perennials

  • Tea room open daily

  • Plant nursery

The garden covers 7 acres in total, with paths leading through woodland settings, passing superb ornaments, then opening onto spacious lawns; formal areas; through an Italian Garden - where some of the less hardy plants find shelter in the walled setting, and on through various other planting schemes. These include a herbaceous border, heather beds and informal mixtures.

The Pope's Urn - one of many fine ornaments

'Groundcover' is used to considerable effect, with a wide range of plants. Not here the boring hordes of Cotoneasters and Ivies; but bold plantings of suitable low growing shrubs and perennials.

An increasing range of choice 'tender' plants is being used - often unusual. These can be found in the shrub areas; perennial beds; planters; borders, or simply in informal beds.

The garden is open every day from 1st April - 31st October. 11am until 6pm.

Great Comp is easily accessible to wheelchair users. We have disabled toilet facilities.

Coach parties are welcome - by appointment. Visits can be arranged outside normal opening times.
